Canon Example: have fun

Character Motivation: Right now, 12 is driven by dual purposes. That is to say, responsibility and action. Via a companion that he doesn't remember but is nevertheless important to him, he's been given the duty of care. It's his job to save lives, the universe and everything. That's who he is as a Doctor. That's what the name means. And, at canon point, it means staying on Earth for ten years in order to keep an eye on Missy, who he is both the warden and prisoner of. Part of the reason is because he believes that she has a capacity to change. But he also doesn't trust her. Yet, it is up to him to take care of her and save her from herself and the universe from her. It's a very tricky situation and he has to not fall to her wiles.

Action because he really wants to get out. His natural impulse is to see time and space and get into and out of trouble. He even sneaks away from Nardole who is both his sort of companion, sort of butler, sort of reminding him of his duty. Which, honestly, he's grateful for. He's motivated for adventure and fun and longs to do it and so finds ways to circumvent things. But at the end of the day, he knows he will never get far from "home", and, in a way, enjoys that security.

Personality:

Essentially, 12 is tired. He has had a very long day, and he'd like to have an adventure and to take a nap. It's another thing that has him vacillating back and forth between staying at home and going out to see the stars, leaving him swinging back and forth like a manic pendulum. Mostly he is tired of being the Doctor, tired of the enormous weight on his shoulders. He'll do the right thing, always, but he is kind of tired of doing it at some points. He is not one keen on regenerating either, figuring this is his last go and not a go he was particularly supposed to get, but he uses it to his utmost.

That being said, once 12 gets going, it's hard to get him to stop. He can be as manic as his other selves, running back and forth to solve some mystery or figure out some problem. This is especially true as Earth-bound as he is, he has a mind equivalent to a hamster in a small cage that must run on its wheel constantly or face the risk of choking purposefully on a sunflower seed. It's not quite that dire, honestly, but illustrates his need to sometimes go-go-go. But then, he usually regrets having gone as things always seem to take a turn for the worse.

Folded into all this is the idea that 12 is a bit of a pessimistic-optimist. Hope for the best, expect the worst. This is especially true of Missy. He knows she can't be trusted and yet wants to trust her so much. He wants her to have come around to be a good person, or, barring that, at least not a homicidal maniac. That's partly the reason he tries so hard even if he thinks that the ending is going to be for naught and she will just go back to her old tricks.

This also plays to the idea of his compassion. That is the one thing that drives him above all others. Compassion for those he cares about and those who are fighting against unjust odds. Compassion for people in general. He urges others to just be kind. To show mercy. To help and harbor. And inspire. Which is partly why he turns to teaching. Or one of the reasons anyway.

He's still the Doctor however, and retains much of the Doctor-y traits. He is clever and sharpwitted, always looking for the stars, can be a bit impatient and short-tempered at times, especially when people just refuse to understand. Is a bit off kilter when it comes to sense of humor and loves to be popular with everyone. Mind, he's not always good at being popular, hence his weird use of slang and the "hello, fellow kids" vibe he gives off, but he does his best. He also doesn't like being as old as he feels which is very and tries to point out that he's not really. He's also arrogant as hell and thinks he's the bee's knees and would even say that unironically, though he has developed enough self-awareness to know when he's being a jackass... most of the time.

Things that set him apart from his other selves is his ability to jam out on his electric guitar and also his propensity to eat. Oh and he sounds far more Scottish than he is.

Canon Strength/Weaknesses:

In the Doctor's case always, his strengths and weaknesses generally come hand in hand.

Cleverness/intellect: The Doctor is a clever boots. He would call himself a mad genius playboy philanthropist except without the playboy part because relationships have strings he would rather do without, and yet keeps getting strung up by them. This gets him out of situations almost quite as often as it gets him into them. The thing is, he can never resist and lure to his intellect. If he sees a puzzle, he's got to get to the bottom of it. This could mean anything from solving a rubix cube to accidentally getting involved with a coup. Oops. But he always finds a way to get out of it again.

Compassion: 12 is particularly driven by his compassion and it's pretty great, as in large, as far as the Doctor is concerned. That is his current emphasis. To help those in need, whether on an indiviudal leval ala Missy, or a planetary level ala that stupid show with the Robots and I haaaate it so much why was season 10 such a dumpster fire oh my fuck. As I said this is one of his main motivations, but it also is his downfall. His need to show compassion gets him into trouble, has him work harder to save the day always and fight for justice, even though he's tired-- and also, in the end, leads to him getting used by the Master/Missy, though not at his current canon point. Even though he knew that it would end this way, he couldn't stop but by being good.

Technical Knowhow: Somewhat slotting side by side with his cleverness, the Doctor is very good with his hands. If he can't make it, he can jury rig it. If he can't do that, he can give it a good thumping. Or alternately he can hitchhike. He's very good with electronics, research and anything that requires finding a solution. Though unfortunately, because he's good, sometimes he thinks he has something fixed when really it's more broken than ever and sends them spinning off to, say, A highly guarded Sontaran colony rather than to Dairy Queen for those flurry things they turn upside down.

Apprentice Sorcerer Application
Class: Mystic. Though 12 can be a hero, these days it's rather reluctantly. But he is very good at seeing the bigger picture. Smaller details often skip his notice, which is why he needs people to prod him, his strengths lie in seeing how things connect/interconnect and, broadly, how to make it go smoothly. At least 6 times out of 10. bloody David Tennant. He can be very wise and very intelligent. But never quite often at the same time. Mostly he's just badass. Is this your card? No? Well he'll find it eventually. Good thing you didn't ask him to saw you in half, honestly.

Magic Style: Point a sonic at it and see if it works! |D The sonic screw driver is going to be his main tool of spell activation, with the sonic shades as standby. get you a Doctor that can do both Most of it is going to be will power/knowledge based and will require lots of futsing with a sonic. Don't worry if the store doesn't have one. He can make his own.

First Person Sample:

[the feed opens with him sitting side saddle on a carousel, eating fairy floss and wearing Mickey Mouse ears because that is the in thing apparently]

Hallo, I'm the Doctor. Nice to meet you.

So, this place! It's strange! Everything about it is so familiar. It's more than just I feel like I've been here before, it's like I've known it. Like the deep knowledge. Like some part of the zeitgeist has become sort of a zietghast. ... Ghast means ghost by the way. It's a pun or play on words.

Anyway, it's kind of amazing. And it's a good holiday,I think. Nice to get away from Oh!-- [he points at the mirror] That's another thing! Holiday! It's like we're on holiday. Despite that we're doing work and getting paid. Why do you think that is? Does anyone else share the sentiment or is it me?

[the ride comes to a stop and everyone gets off. The Doctor eyes the operator]

One more time, maestro.

[from off-mirror, there is a sigh and the ride starts again]

Happiest place on earth.... [and he takes another bite of fairy floss]
